Accutane

Definition - What does Accutane mean?

Accutane or isotretinoin is a form of Vitamin A which reduces the oil glands in the user's skin. It was created by created by Swiss global health-care company Hoffman-La Roche, or Roche. It has been used for years to treat the most severe cases of acne when other treatment plans have failed.

Unfortunately, Accutane also has severe side-effects which can include Crohn's disease, birth defects, anxiety, irritability, loss or interest in social activities, weight and appetite changes, sadness, and suicidal tendencies.

Accutane is now only offered in the United States under a special program called iPLEDGE which requires users to document and verify that they understand the severe and negative side-effects of this medication. Women who take Accutane should be especially careful because it can cause serious birth defects. Women also must agree to use two forms of birth control before and after taking the drug.

Accutane disclosures

Beginning in the late 1980's Accutane's manufacturer was required to include warning labels on their medications to increase public awareness of the potential risk in depression and suicide. By 2000 the FDA reported there had been 66 suicides/1300 psychiatric Accutane-related cases reported to them. As late as 2007, the FDA began to report that users should be especially careful about buying Accutane under generic labels online.

Accutane medical malpractice cases

Dozens of lawsuits have been filed against the La Roche Group claiming they have not provided adequate warnings to their customers about the dangers of Accutane. Millions of dollars have also been paid out to claimants who won cases against the company for their blatant disregard and lack of responsibility to inform patients of the serious risks associated with Accutane.
